With just a few clicks of the mouse, you can find information on air emissions from power plants. EPA has issued a new edition of its Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID) and updated Power Profiler to help you better understand the environmental impacts of electricity use. With today's updates, eGRID and Power Profiler now contain 2005 emissions data.

We are paying more for electricity than ever, and the price will continue to rise as international carbon trading kicks in. Lower energy light globes and switching off power hungry appliances helps but generally the big cost in our homes is heating and cooling. A new publication titled Geothermal Heat Pumps: Installation Guide shows how we can reduce our electricity bills by anything up to 60%.

Outlining Toyota’s response to rapidly changing global market conditions, growing environmental issues and increasing material costs, President Katsuaki Watanabe said that the company was accelerating its development of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all electric vehicles. Watanabe said that Toyota would advance its delivery of plug-ins for fleet deployment to 2009 from 2010, and was planning series production of a next-generation electric vehicle in the early 2010s.

Diabetes Health just returned from the annual meeting of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), in Washington, D.C., August 6 through 9, 2008. We joined 3,500 attendees in, as AADE President, Amparo Gonzalez, RN, BSN, CDE, said, “taking on the challenges of delivering diabetes education in today’s healthcare environment.”

Marie McCarren attended a session titled “Practical Resources for Vegan Diet Instruction for Diabetes” by Caroline Trapp, MSN, APRN, BC-ADM, CDE, director of Diabetes Education and Care, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Washington, D.C.

The good news? You won’t need to count calories or restrict portions. You may feel that you are eating a lot, but you’ll probably be consuming fewer calories than you did when you were eating meat and sugary foods.
