The collapse of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001 sent a wave of fear and anxiety across the United States that rippled around the world exactly the result the terrorists were hoping for.  Most people do not do their best thinking when they are terrorized and tend to overreact to whatever scared them.  The planners of the attacks are well aware of this phenomenon and this was part of their plan.  If they could prod the US and other large developed nations to overreact and create a disruption to their culture, then they have been able to multiply their results and further serve their goal of disrupting the functioning of the target countries.  In effect by creating such a far reaching result they proved that they are powerful enough to be reckoned with exactly the status they were hoping for.
